Exhibition "A LIFE IN BATIK. From the Sultan's palace to the villages of Java"

Textile Museum and Documentation Centre Terrassa, 1 December 2009 - 28 february 2010

On the island of Java in Indonesia, batik has been one of the arts of the court for centuries, carried out by the craftswomen who live in the mountain villages or the great rice plains. It is a compendium of popular and magical knowledge which feeds the arts of the palace and at the same time is ennobled by them. The decorative motifs are full of mythological and cosmic symbols. In the region of Jogjakarta alone more than 1,400 are known. Among them are the four elements of the world and of man – earth, wind, fire and water – and the three levels of the Hindu Javanese universe: the heavens represented by the bird, the earth by the tree, and the underworld by the dragon. The exhibition follows the Javanese notion of the three stages of life. Each stage These three stages, from conception to the afterlife, are always associated with a specific type of batik. The batiks have all been made especially for the exhibition. A Life in Batik was created by Elizabeth Inandiak, and is a co-production of the CDMT, the Premià de Mar Print Museum and the Arenys de Mar Lace Museum.

“ENDYESTHAI”: To Dress. Towards a Costume Culture Museum

Benaki Museum Athens, 23 March - 23 May 2010

The Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation is organising a costume exhibition to be held at the Benaki Museum next spring (March, 23-May, 23 2010) entitled: "Endyesthai (To Dress) - Towards a Costume Culture Museum". The scope of the exhibition is to display the Foundation’s important costume collection and to underline the necessity of creating a Costume Culture Museum in Greece. The exhibition aims to present to the public a global consideration of the act of dressing and to examine it from as many different angles as possible. The arrangement of the exhibits will follow two parallel and complementary concepts: the main one will show the evolution of dress, mainly in the West, from body painting in primitive cultures to the extravagances presented on modern catwalks. Parallel to this, there will be a series of smaller units, extensions of the main one, looking at costume from the point of view of its function: ceremonial garments, traditional costumes, uniforms, disposable garments, theatre costumes and so on. Concurrently with the exhibition from 9 to 11 April, the Hellenic Costume Society and the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation will organize the International Costume Conference entitled “ENDYESTHAI (To Dress): Historical, sociological and methodological approaches”. TEXMEDIN will also be present during the exhibition period. A space dedicated to the project with all the communication material will be a great opportunity to present TEXMEDIN to a wide range of public.

The TEXMEDIN Digital Library brings together in an ICT platform the most representative elements of the textile and apparel collections detained in the archives of textile and fashion museums and enterprises. At present, it contains nearly 800 items - new items will be added in the near future - coming from the Textile Museum of Prato, Centre of Documentation and Textile Museum of Terrassa, Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation and Carpiformazione. The TEXMEDIN Digital Library is an innovative instrument linking each item to its cultural, social, historical and environmental information. Information about new and advanced materials that can replace originally used ones and about modern environmentally friendly production technologies, regulations and legislation for consumer protection will also be available for a selection of items. These features, combined with an effective search mechanism, a user friendly presentation screen and the possibility for the user to create his/her own theme by selecting different items that can be easily accessed each time the Digital Library is entered, will offer a viable tool to professionals looking for inspiration and creativity in the treasure house of the existing T&A heritage.
